Beoncy Laishram, the First Transgender from Northeast to Become a Doctor | The Quint

Dr Beoncy Laishram of Manipur fought prejudice and hostility to become northeast's first transgender doctor. Beoncy was born as ‘Boboi’, the only child of her parents. In 2016 she gave herself an identity that was truly her – she was a Nupi Maanbi now, the man-to-woman transgender of Manipur.

Behdienkhlam Festival

Behdienkhlam is one of the many cultural festivals celebrated in Meghalaya, primarily among the people of the Jaintia Tribe who follow the indigenous faith. It is celebrated in the month of July during the monsoon season. The main purpose of this festival is to appease the gods to ensure a productive harvest as well as to ward off any diseases.

Best State for Women in India?

A market in Manipur's Imphal houses over 4000 vendors, all of them women. This marketplace is a mini representation of Manipur's society, where women are at the forefront of running the economy. And not just the economy, historically important social movements have been spearheaded by women. But while this matrilineal setup has ensured women do not remain a passive spectator, it still hasn't been able to push their political participation. Infact, Manipur remains one of the worst Indian states when it comes to women leaders.

Bhal Khabor

A writer looks for a bit of good news in the days of the Assam Movement (1985-90), when the youth had sunk to the lowest depths of degradation, and civilized emotions seemed to be wiped completely out of existence. Everywhere prevailed only lust and cowardly violence. Newspapers had chilling pages of depressing stories and to read them was to be overcome by an even greater feeling of horror and helplessness. Finally the writer discovers a small piece of news item in a morning paper that gives him hope as it brings him tales of inspiring people who survive the troubled times by piously and devoutly reading their holy scriptures.
