Shillong has been the music capital of the region for the longest time, owing to its reputation for being the confluence of various traditions and genres of music, from indigenous music to western music, from a unique kind of blues to rock music and fundamentally because of the love for music that its people harbour and practise here.

On the 5th December, 2020, the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival conducted a virtual program called ‘Rustle of Spring, Whiff of Gunpowder Documentaries from Northeast India’. A string of performances by a group of artists from Shillong were streamed on the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival official youtube channel. The artists were sponsored by The Northeast India AV Archive in collaboration with the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Japan and Yamagata Film Festival, Japan to showcase their music on the platform.
