Crossing The Sela Heights: The Roads To Tawang, Much Light At The End Of Game-changing Tunnels

Arunachal Pradesh & Assam: In our series, 'Along The China Front: Commanding The Tawang Heights', Episode One documents our travel from Dibrugarh, Assam to Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. StratNews Global focuses on the north west of Arunachal Pradesh along the LAC—the Tawang sector—after our 'East Of The Northeast' series from the east and south east of the state on the India-Burma, now Myanmar border. ‪@StratNewsGlobal‬ team of Amitabh P Revi and Rohit Pandita looks at the spurt in infrastructure and connectivity development that are having a far-reaching effect in the northeastern states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. In recent years, India's government has made significant investments and plans for road and tunnel construction to improve connectivity and security along the border. In this episode, we travel along the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang(BCT) road, through the Nechiphu and Sela Tunnels and the Sela Pass towards Tawang. We interact with Border Roads Organisation, Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Indian Air Force personnel to understand the strategic significance of the region and the efforts to counter Chinese aggression. StratNews Global also pays tribute to Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat at his memorial on the way to Tawang. In Assam, the government has built a number of new roads and tunnels, including the strategically important Bogibeel Bridge, which is the longest river bridge in India. The bridge has reduced the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by several hours, and it has also made it easier for the Indian military to deploy troops to the border region. In Arunachal Pradesh, the government has built a number of new roads and tunnels, including the Nechiphu and Sela Tunnel, which is the longest in the world at a height of over 13,500 feet. This makes a critical difference for the military to deploy troops and heavy weaponry to the LAC with China. The network is also significantly improving connectivity and economic development in the region.

Crossing the mighty Brahmaputra in monsoon spate

Aerial footage of a smooth crossing of the massive Brahmaputra river in Assam. The river is so wide that it looks like an ocean. This was taken during the monsoon season when the flow was at it maximum flow. The Brahmaputra also called Tsangpo-Brahmaputra, is a trans-boundary river and one of the major rivers of Asia. With its origin in the Angsi Glacier, located on the northern side of the Himalayas in Burang County of Tibet as the Yarlung Tsangpo River, it flows across southern Tibet to break through the Himalayas in great gorges (including the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon) and into Arunachal Pradesh (India) where it is known as Dihang or Siang. It flows southwest through the Assam Valley as Brahmaputra and south through Bangladesh as the Jamuna (not to be mistaken with Yamuna of India). In the vast Ganges Delta it merges with the Padma, the main distributary of the Ganges, then the Meghna, before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. About 1,800 miles (2,900 km) long, the Brahmaputra is an important river for irrigation and transportation. The average depth of the river is 124 feet (38 m) and maximum depth is 380 feet (120 m). The river is prone to catastrophic flooding in spring when the Himalayan snows melt. The average discharge of the river is about 19,300 cubic metres per second (680,000 cu ft/s), and floods can reach over 100,000 cubic metres per second (3,500,000 cu ft/s). It is a classic example of a braided river and is highly susceptible to channel migration and avulsion. It is also one of the few rivers in the world that exhibit a tidal bore. It is navigable for most of its length. The river drains the Himalaya east of the Indo-Nepal border, southern-central portion of the Tibetan plateau above the Ganges basin, south-eastern portion of Tibet, the Patkai-Bum hills, the northern slopes of the Meghalaya hills, the Assam plains and the northern portion of Bangladesh. The basin, especially south of Tibet is characterized by high levels of rainfall. Kangchenjunga (8,586m) is the only peak above 8,000m and the highest point within the Brahmaputra basin. The Brahmaputra's upper course was long unknown, and its identity with the Yarlung Tsangpo was only established by exploration in 1884–86. This river is often called Tsangpo-Brahmaputra river.
