The Khasi Indigenous Community of Laitmawsiang Co-Existing with Nature
Synopsis
Indigenous people comprise 5% of the world's population and protect 80% of the Earth’s biodiversity. The Khasi Indigenous community of Laitmawsiang in #Meghalaya, has been similarly safeguarding their forests and natural resources for centuries. Their lives are intrinsically tied to nature for basic necessities, livelihood, infrastructure, and medicines. This interdependence with nature has become a cultural practice, which has been passed from generation to generation. This Earth Day, we would like to highlight and honour a community that has been at the forefront of biodiversity conservation. Earth Day is celebrated annually on 22nd April, to recognise the achievements of the environmental movement, and raise awareness of the need to protect the planet's natural resources for future generations. Our documentary on the #Khasi #Community is an effort not just to share their way of life with the world, but to bring attention to the gradual threat approaching the community, their livelihood, biodiversity, and their culture as a whole. The threat of climate change and its consequences has the capacity to impact their community, and in turn, the entire world. At Swiss Learning Exchange, we believe that every story is important and deserves to be heard. We collaborate with experts, communities, and sustainability champions in order to help them share their sustainability efforts and expertise with the world. By facilitating this transfer of knowledge, we strive to achieve our common goal of a long-lasting, sustainable future, together. If you’re working towards sustainable development, and you’re looking for the right way to share your efforts in order to raise awareness, get in touch with us at info@learning.com.
